Colllection Building is a continous process and librarian and library staff to do hardwork to build library colllection. In libraries collections are build various methods. Here I discuss collection building methods and advantages of Library collection building.

There are five methods of collection development.
- Purchase
- Gift or Donation
- Exchange
- Institutional Membership
- Deposit System
Methods of Collection Development
1. Purchase
Purchase is the basic method of library collection development through this method a certain amount is allocated for the collection development of the library. Library can purchase from local of international vendor as per the need of the library.
2. Gift or Donation
Gift and donation is also an important method for the collection of libraries. Gifts are donation in the both the shape either cash or in shape of collection. Library users, library friends, donner organizations support the library through gift and donation.
3. Exchange
Exchange is another method to develop the collection exchange of library materials among the libraries, institutions and government organization through mutual understanding and consortium.
4. Institutional Membership
Library also get the printed and electronic resources through institutional membership of different national and international orgarnzation and professional bodies. Through this membership libraries get free access to their resources of printed copies.
5. Deposit systems
Libraries and designated libraries received publication copies from the Government organization, National and international organizations as deposit copies. University and received different document form research organization and national library received new printed material as deposit system.
What are the main advantages of collection development?
There are 4 main advantage or benefit of the collection development in libraries.
Scope of the subject.
Scope of the subjects are increase in libraries. Basic to in depth topic cover on specific subjects. General reader to specific users like researchers and scholars takes advantage from the variety of collection.
Update the knowledge.
Frequently addition in library materials library have update knowledge assets. New version and edition of the books are updated through collection development.
Need of Users
Collection development also support the full fill the need of the users what they want to read is available. Positive message goes to from library side.
Resource Sharing
Good collection in libraries help in resource sharing and as well as inter library loan. So, collection development process also thinks out of the box within the library and outside the other libraries for the resource sharing collaboration.
