Library Resource Sharing Needs and purpose

In the age of information technology and influx growth rate of publishing industry it is very difficult to libraries to acquire all the resources for their users. Library resources are limited and in terms of collection (Physical and printed) due to funding and manpower. Library resource sharing is one key idea to fulfill the need of users and overcome the gap of library resources. In this small piece of writing discuss the following questions.

Q 1 What is Resource Sharing?

Resource Sharing

“Resource Sharing” means making the collections of one library available to the patrons of another library efficiently and effectively. Resource sharing encompasses the technical capabilities, staff expertise and policies necessary to achieve that objective. Resource sharing incorporates activities related to automated discovery tools (including bibliographic library databases), collection management, bibliographic description, delivery, interlibrary loan, reciprocal access and reciprocal borrowing. Resource sharing is a core system service.

Libraries do resource sharing due to following reasons.

  1. Libraries cannot acquire all the resource for library users due to fund.
  2. Every library patron has different need so some time library need resource sharing due to fulfill the need of resource sharing.
  3. Libraries physical and virtual space are limited so resource sharing is the best way utilization library physical and virtual resources.
  4. Resource sharing save the library users time in terms of e-collections/databases, users can get quick access.
  5. Resource sharing creates good relationship among the libraries and avoid the duplication.

  1. ) Sharing of human resources at local, regional and national levels bring cooperation among the same cadre of libraries.
  2. ) Resource sharing help-out in common project of the common interest among the libraries.
  3. ) Resource sharing open the new avenue of collection building and promotion and marketing of libraries.
  4. ) Resource sharing purpose is to maximum utilization of library collections.
