Research Hypothesis

Hypothesis: Research Hypothesis its Importance, functions and characteristics by Muhammad Yousuf Ali

This short article is discuss 4-points about the Hypothesis/Research Hypothesis

  1. What is Hypothesis? or Definition of Hypothesis?
  2. What are the Importance/role of Hypothesis in research?
  3. What are the functions of Hypothesis?
  4. What are the characteristics of the good hypotheses?

1. What is Hypothesis?

Hypothesis is a formal statement that presents the expected relationship between an independent and dependent variable. (Creswell, 1994)

A hypothesis defined as a tentative proposition suggested as a solution to a problem or as an explanation of some phenomenon. (Ary, Jacobs and Razavieh, 1984)

In simple words Hypothesis or Hypotheses are defined as the formal statement of the tentative or expected prediction or explanation of the relationship between two or more variables in a specified population.

Researcher and Experts

A hypothesis helps to translate the research problem and objective into a clear explanation or prediction of the expected results or outcomes of the study.

2. What are the Importance/role of Hypothesis in research?

1. HYPOTHESIS provides clarity to the research problem and research objectives.

2. It describes, explains or predicts the expected results or outcome of the research.

3.  It indicates the type of research design.

4. It directs the research study process. It identifies the population of the research study that is to be investigated or examined. It facilitates data collection, data analysis and data interpretation.

3. What are the functions of Hypothesis?

  1. It enables an investigator to start his research work.

2. It may lead to formulations of another hypothesis.

3. It leads to interpret results drawing conclusions related to original purpose.

4. What are the characteristics of the good hypotheses?

A good hypothesis must be based on a good research question.

Hypothesis should be simple, specific and stated in advance.

It must have explanatory power. · It must state the expected relationship between variables.

It must be testable.

It should be consistent with the existing body of knowledge.

It should be stated as simply and concisely as possible.
