Pros and Cons of IoT

by Muhammad Yousuf Ali

The latest available data, there are approximately 15.14 billion connected IoT devices. This figure is expected to almost double to 29.42 billion by 2030. This short article described the Pros and Cons of the Internet of Things. There are different advantages of the IoT which attracts human beings to frequently use in our daily life. Beside these are some disagreements about IoT.

The Internet of things (IoT) describes physical objects (or groups of such objects) with sensors, processing ability, software and other technologies that connect and exchange data with other devices and systems over the Internet or other communications networks. (Gillis, 2021).

What are the Pros and Cons of the Internet of Things?

Pros of IoT

There are different advantages or pros are described by the experts regarding the IoT. The main advantages of internet of things are highlighted here.

  1. Smart Life

  2. Fastest Communication

  3. Business Model

 4. Data Driven Policy

 5. Smart Access to Information

1. Smart Life:-

The Internet of Things makes our life smart way. Different automated devices improve the quality life of the internet of things users and concept of smart lives shifted into smart cities.

2. Fastest Communication:-

IoT move speedy communication on internet. IoT moves fast track of internet communication 5G data transmission of wifi speed 1300 mps a normal internet service provide to users 2.4 Ghz processor of mobile of laptop. Speed of data transmission from Machine to Machine (M2M) more quickly rather than 3G and 4G period.

3. Business Model

Businesses can easily run all around the world via IoT devices connect and communicate with customers. Multiple platforms of information like images and video clips are shared and provide information about the products.

4. Data Driven Policy

Data Driven policy helps identify what is the current trends are going into society. Data driven policy helps to know about the opportunities and challenges.

5. Smart Work and Productivity

Due to the use of IoT based products works are smart and easy to perform, like manufacturing of goods, health care procedure and technology, sales and marketing jobs perform easily.

Cons of IoT

The cons of the internet of things are highlighted by the different experts. The important disadvantages are discussed here.

  1. Privacy and security concerns

2. Environmental sustainability impact

3. Mental Health and Social Isolation

4. Standardization Complexity

5. Unemployment

1. Privacy and Security concerns

There are major security concerns regarding IoT devices. Cyber Scam, internet fraud and money scam are often occurring due to hacking of internet devices and of email accounts.

Privacy is another concern personal image and video clips are mostly misuse by the prior permission of the users. Personal life privacy become unsecure due to frequently misuse of IoT.

Environmental sustainability impact

A concern regarding Internet-of-things technologies pertains to the environmental impacts of the manufacture, use, and eventual disposal of all these semiconductor-rich devices (Finley, 2014). Modern electronics are replete with a wide variety of heavy metals and rare-earth metals, as well as highly toxic synthetic chemicals. This makes them extremely difficult to properly recycle. Electronic components are often incinerated or placed in regular landfills.

Mental Health and Social Isolation

The excessive use internet of things like laptop, computer, tablets, blue tooth create mental health and anxiety issue. Social Isolation is also created you know the thousand of friends and followers but does not have physical friendship at your neighbour which create social isolation. Users rely on smart devices instead of doing physical work, causing them to become lethargic and inactive.

Complexity

The billions of devices are connected in the IoT ecosystem. These devices are built by different companies, which raises the issue of complexity in tagging and monitoring.

All the manufacturers build devices with different standards which create complexity of version drivers and application software. Bluetooth can connect different devices; it faces several compatibility and complexity issues regarding optimum use IoT device application.

This compatibility issue may force the buyers or users to buy devices from a specific manufacturer which may create a monopoly in the market.

Unemployment:

The routine tasks are performed by the machine and devices which create unemployment. Most of Human labour jobs are squeezed due to machine invention. Self-driving cars are replacing the driver jobs. Survillance camera replace security personnel job. Robotics perform jobs in call centers to address the customer complaints.
