Library Resources and Resource Sharing Methods

With a large amount of production of journals, e-content and other Information sources, It is difficult to manage and acquire all the information resources for library users with limited funding resources and budget. Resource sharing is the key idea to overcoming this situation. This article briefly discusses the different methods of resource sharing.

Q 1 What is Resource Sharing?
Resource Sharing
“Resource Sharing” means making the collections of one library available to the patrons of another library efficiently and effectively. Resource sharing encompasses the technical capabilities, staff expertise and policies necessary to achieve that objective. Resource sharing incorporates activities related to automated discovery tools (including bibliographic library databases), collection management, bibliographic description, delivery, interlibrary loan, reciprocal access and reciprocal borrowing. Resource sharing is a core system service.

There are three types of resources available in libraries
Collection
Physical and online both collection are used for resource sharing in library through Inter library loan, Document Delivery and exchange of Publication
Library Funds/Budget
Library funds and budgets are also used for the library resource sharing, like consortium is also example of resource sharing via funds
Human Resources
Human resource are also share regarding the training of library technology and any special assignment workshop and other related task.

Methods of Resource Sharing
Libraries do resource sharing with following Methods
Inter-library loan
Interlibrary loan is the process by which a library requests material from, or supplies material to, another library.
Document Delivery
Document Delivery is a service that obtains for specified users copies of articles and book chapters needed for library patron share to other library
Cooperative acquisition
Cooperative Acquisitions Program/Agreement is open to any library or research institution that would like to acquire publications from any library or libraries.
Library consortium
A library consortium is any cooperative association of libraries that coordinates resources and/or activities on behalf of its members, whether they are school, public, academic, special libraries and/or information centers.
Exchange of publications
Exchange of Publications are also a way of resource sharing where one library share its publications with one or more library. Usually research journal publication, newsletter and reports are sharin in Exchange of Publication
Specialized purchasing program
Special purchased program library purchased with other library in collection. Databases are electronic resources are used the specialized purchased program.
Shared cataloguing
Libraries are also doing the resource sharing through catalogue, share catalogue help libraries to avoid the library duplicate collection. Today share catalogue is easy and feasible through OPAC.
Sharing of bibliographical data
Some library share bibliographical data to other libraries, on the basis of bibliographical data resource are requested to respective librarian.
