1. What is a Public Library?

A public library is an organization established, supported and funded by the community, either through local, regional Provincial or national government or through some other form of community organization.

Public Library provides access to knowledge, information and works of the imagination through a range of resources and services and is equally available to all members of the community regardless of race, nationality, age, gender, religion, language, disability, economic and employment status and educational attainment.

2. What are the different types of Public Library?

There are two important types of Public Library

1. Community Library

Community Library is also a type of public library. Community library serve to a specific community they live in specific area fisherman community lives near by the coastal area. Any library small library serve to that community is known as community library.

2. Mobile Library

Mobile Library is type of public library serve the remote area. Mobile library is a vehicle designed for use as a library. It is designed to hold books on shelves in such a way that when the vehicle is parked they can be accessed by readers. Mobile libraries are often used to provide library services to villages and city suburbs that have no library buildings.

Besides these two types there different types of public library i.e, as per the population of the area ruler library/village library, town library, city library and etc.

3. What are the characteristics of Public Library?

There are five fundamental characteristics shared by public libraries:-

1. Public Libraries are open to all, and every community member can access the collection.

2. Public Libraries are governed by a board to serve the public interest.

3. Public Libraries are entirely voluntary in that no one is ever forced to use the services provided.

4. Public Library provide basic services without any charge.

5. Public Libraries are generally supported Public funds i.e., taxes (usually local, though any level of government can and may contribute).

4. What are the core functions of a Public Library?

I. Education & Information

Supporting both individual and self-conducted informal education as well as formal education at all levels. Information The public library is the local centre of information making all kinds of knowledge and information readily available to its users.

II. Personal development

Public library Provides opportunities for personal creative development of the individual.

III. Reading Habits

Public library also plays very important role to develop the reading habits of the individual, community and society.

IV. Cultural Development

An important role of the public library is providing a focus for cultural and artistic development in the community and helping to shape and support the cultural identity of the community.

V. Social Need of The Public

Public library also support In developing policies to fulfil the role and purpose of the social need of the community and provide services according to the community social needs.

4. What are the services basic service provide a Public Library?

There are following 06-core service provided by the Public Library

I. Reading Hall Facilities

Public library provides reading hall facilities to its users where library patron stay and read the library material as per their reading habits.

II. Book borrowing facilities

Public library also provide the book borrowing facilities to its library users.  

III. Internet access to library users

To provide online access to e-content public libraries have internet and wifi facilities. And Public libraries have also small internet café or computer room.

IV. Document Delivery Service

Public library also provide the Document delivery to its user’s article and easy and other reading stuff supply to the community.

V. Reference Services

Reference services is also provide to the public library where reference librarian support/assistance to library users and their day to day query.

IV. Events Organisation

Public library also organise events for the respective users For Kids Library Organized story telling session, Book launching, Seminars and other related events as per the need and demand of the respective library users.

VII. Services to Special users Groups

Public Library also provides services to special groups of communities like women, Senior Citizen, people with special need/learning disabilities.  

Any other library services like community support services to promotion of reading habits and education.

5. What are the key Organization of Public Library?

There are two important Organization of Public library

I. Public Library Association (PLA) 

The Public Library Association (PLA) is the largest association dedicated to supporting the unique and evolving needs of public library professionals. PLA is division of ALA.Founded in 1944, PLA serves nearly 10,000 members in public libraries large and small in communities across the United States and Canada, with a growing presence around the world.

II. Public Libraries Section

This Section provides an active international forum for the development and promotion of public libraries which serve the whole community in the context of the information society and ensure free and equal access to information at the local level. It also includes mobile libraries.

1. What is an Academic Library?

“An academic library is a library that is attached to a education institution i.e., school college or university and serves Three complementary purposes”

I. To support the curriculum, related collections and reading material.

II.  To support the faculty and students in advance knowledge in respective subject.

III. To bring the latest research and development in respective filed and subject knowledge.

2. What are the different types of academic libraries?

There are three main types of academic libraries.

I. School Library

An academic library set up which is set in any school known as school library.

II. College Library

An academic library set up which is set in any college known as a college library. 

III. University Library

An academic library set up which is operation under the university referred as university library.

In any other article discuss about the each library like school, college and university library.

3. What are the core functions of an Academic Library?

There are four main core functions of an Academic library.

I. Collections Development for library user as per their respective curriculum (Books, Journals, Magazine, Reference Books, Conference proceedings, and e-resources and databases.

II. Provide additional reading material to its faculty members and students besides their course and curriculum.

III. Electronic Resources and Web-based information sharing with library clients.

IV. Help out and support to students in their Assignments, Projects, presentation and other curriculum activities.

4. What are the services of an Academic Library?

There are six core services provided by the academic library either its school, college and university library.

Academic library provide following services to its users

I. Reading Hall where students can read library or course related material.

II. Reference services either its virtual, digital or face to face reference services.

III. Literature search services either online or within library collection.

IV. Electronic Resource development and provide access to the electronic resources and subscribe electronic resources for the library users.

V. Information literacy

And provide instructions about the library usage as well as orientation of the library resources.

VI. Research support services

VII. Many more and any other services which is required by the library client or library users.

1. What is Library?

“Library” term derived from the Latin liber, meaning “book.” In Greek and the Romance languages, the corresponding term is bibliotheca. A collection or group of collections of books and/or other print or non print materials organised and maintained for use (reading, consultation, study, research and preparing of Bibliography and etc.).

As per American library Association,

“A library is a collection of resources in a variety of formats that is (1) organized by information professionals or other experts who (2) provide convenient physical, digital, bibliographic, or intellectual access and (3) offer targeted services and programs (4) with the mission of educating, informing, or entertaining a variety of audiences/users (5) and the goal of stimulating individual learning and advancing society as a whole.”

3. What are the different types of library by its format?

There are three types of library on the basis of the format

1. Physical library

           Where the library has physical library building

2. e-Library/Online Library/Digital Library

In such library does not have physical collection? But document and collection are maintained in digital format and save on server and provide access through VPN internet and intranet to the library users.

3. Hybrid library

Hybrid libraries are the mixture of both physical library and online library. Libraries are physically exists as well as provide online resources access to library users.     

One the basis of library collection and supporting/parent organizations library can be divided into four types.

1. Academic Library

Academic library further divided into three category, academic libraries run under the any parent organization

            a. School library

b. college library

c. University library

2. Special Library

Special library served under the any special institute like medical, law, military, media and etc.

3. Public Library

Public library serve general readers and run under the local, district, municipal and provincial authority

4. National Library

National library works to serve the national cause and preserve the knowledge and information for the future generation
